I always wanted a little brother
Yoed: For as long as I can remember, I always wanted a little brother. I’m the youngest in the family and just figured it would be really nice to have a smaller brother or sister – someone with whom I could play, someone I could help, protect and watch as he or she grew up to become a man or a woman. Today I feel this wish has come true, thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Israel and Shimon, my little brother.
As we move forward in life, it’s hard to break free from the everyday whirlwind. I should know, because that’s where I am at right now between University, work and assorted projects. One of the most common sentences my family hears from me is: “I’m really tired!”. My weekly hours with nine year old Shimon are one of the few breaks I have, precious hours dedicated exclusively to fun and my special relationship with Shimon. Every time it gets to the end of our time and I need to go, I hesitate to return to my busy reality, and Shimon always tries to persuade me to stay a little longer, just a few more minutes…
What is our future if not the kids of our present? I see the opportunity that was given me to influence the life of one child over a long period of time, to establish a deep and personal connection with him, to play with him, to laugh with him and to learn from one another, as a great privilege. Today, after more than one year of being with Shimon, I am awed by the light and color than have been added to my life by a very cute kid who I am proud to call my Little Brother.
Shimon: I love Yoed very much – he’s the best Big Brother in the whole world!!
