Two years ago
Yafit: Two years ago I turned to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Israel after seeing an ad in the paper. It took quite a while until Libby called me and said with great emotion ‘I’ve found her’. It was important for her to find just the right match, even if it took time. We went to meet Yarden, who was then 12, at her house, and met her and her mother. There was an immediate click, as if there was a mutual thirst for this kind of relationship, and a feeling that this was the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
That very first week we went to a musical, which coincidentally depicted the kind of relationship that would eventually develop between Yarden and me. We left the musical very happy, and not just because it was an excellent show. Yarden was overwhelmed because she loves music and she’d never been to a musical; and I – because finally I had an excuse to go to all the ‘kiddie’ shows and children’s entertainment that I so enjoy.
Since then, there have been tens of meetings, to which I look forward to no less than my Little Sister. Thanks to the relationship with Yarden, I get to enjoy quality time once a week during which I cut off from all the worries and do the things that I really enjoy, like exploring magical parts of Jerusalem, creating wonderful arts and crafts projects, eating ice cream, watching movies, etc.
Being a Big Sister allows me to reconnect with the little girl in me; it gives my soul a chance to celebrate once a week.
Being a Big Sister means getting in return no less than I give.
Being a Big Sister is staying young forever!
And for all this a huge thank you to Yarden, for without her everything would be so different.
Yarden: It’s fun being with Yafit, she’s like a sister to me. We tell each other secrets and do all kinds of things. I hope that Yafit and I will be together forever.
